Why Try

A couple weeks ago, I received my son's Iowa Test scores. When I saw the envelope, I was filled with a little fear and trepidation. Did I do enough to help him learn? Am I making sure that he is learning all he needs to learn? All these types of questions began to flood my mind as I opened the envelope. I breathed a sign of relief when I realized that my little Einstein had not only done well, but above and beyond well. Later that day, when I was helping him with his homework I praised him for his hard work. He looked up at me with a mischievous gleam in his eye and said, "Thanks, Momma. Did you know that I wasn't really trying  that hard when I took those tests. And sometimes when I'm in class I don't always pay attention. So that means that I don't have to pay attention all the time or try that hard and I can still get good grades. I'm pretty smart, huh!"
I just smiled and mused his hair as he hopped of the chair and went off to play.

My little Einstein's lackadaisical attitude toward school got me thinking. Did he inherit that attitude from me? No way! I love school, I would be a professional student if  possible. But then I realized I may not be like that towards school, but I am like that in other ways. There have been times when I have been going through various trials in my life that I think if I do my best and pray everyday, then God will help me through this. And when he does and the trial is over, I am back to lackadaisical ways.

I need to be an example for my son. I need to make more an effort to be diligent in everything I do. My little Einstein is always going to be watching me, whether I am aware of it or not and whether I want him to or not. I need him to see God in my life everyday, not just when the times get tough.

What about you? In what ways are do you have a lackadaisical attitude?
